Week 3 Recap

There are no more undefeated teams left.  Matt went down in a close match to Jake and I got whooped by Dane.  Did anyone else really pick up on Dane finally jumping in on the trash talking? It took him a while but once Brees went for 31 and Jimmy Graham for 25, he seems to think that he is invincible again and back on track to the ship.  Really, I don't blame him.  He beat me by 60! Although, even though there is no way I could have won, it just kind of sucks that I players with 28, 24 and 16 points on my bench and could have at least looked respectable.

Some high scoring surprises from last week:

  • Antonio Brown (who was on Mike's bench although it didn't really matter in the end)
  • Demarco Murray (one of this year's earliest surprises - good pick Matt B)
  • Josh Gordon/Denarius Moore (Nick really could've used those points, lucky you Jared)

Remember my predictions last week?  If not, here they are:

Week 3 Forecasts
  • Two match-ups this week that I am watching and think will provide plenty of entertainment:
    • Brady/Ty (I was right that it would be close, I was wrong about it being entertaining)
    • Spike/Matt B (Way wrong...spike is falling off his horse, can he get back up?)
  • Boring Match-up of the Week Prediction:
    • Mike/Taylor - it won't even be close (great match that came done to the final MNF game)

Week 3 Recap/Scoreboard

Jared vs. Nick: Jared's leading scorer was his kicker?  And Nick's a defense?  Good luck this year fellas.  Jared, if your kicker leads your team in points again this year, I think you should be forced to change your name.

Spike: You are showing us very quickly why being a homer never pays off...unless you are a Bronco's fan.

Brady:  Who wins by scoring 44 points!?  Seriously?  The refs aid you in winning your college team's game and then this?  Just too much for me to handle in one week.  I hope neither even happens again for you.

Jake:  Good win for you. Remember our discussion before the season about Lesean?  What a stinking animal that dude is.  Keeping riding that man.

Spike:  After losing last week when you only needed 8 point from Tate, I think you need to drop him.  Turns out he really isn't that Golden...

Week 4 Forecasts
  • Unfortunately I think it is a little too late for forecasts at this point.

Waiver Wire Watch

The Week of the Defenses

This was the slowest week of our new season as far as waiver wire additions go with only 6 pickups.  Of those pickups, half were defenses.  Not much to go on here, but as with last week we will take a look at what the pickups were and how they impacted this last weekends games.

Mike Kelly: Added James Starks – Dropped Lance Dunbar
This pickup looked like it would be golden with the injury to Eddie Lacy and the fact that James Starks picked up 22 points in his role replacing Lacy.  Mike didn’t play Starks this week, could have used the points, but didn’t need them as he won by 5 with a starting player getting him 0 points.

Dane Barton: Added Marlon Brown – Dropped Vick Ballard
This was a move by necessity as Vick Ballard got injured and will miss extended time this year.  Marlon Brown dropped off greatly in production from his double digit scoring first two weeks, but Dane didn’t play him and it didn’t matter.

Nick Rose: Added Sam Bradford – Dropped Chris Ivory
Not sure what the thoughts were here.  As far as dropping Chris Ivory goes it is understandable, but when you play one RB and the two left on your bench are not suitable starters, you need another RB to replace Chris Ivory.  Maybe he is stockpiling assets to make a trade with someone for a legitimate RB.  But we may never know.  Sam Bradford followed up his fast start with a slow week being outscored by Nick’s old starter Russell Wilson.  If Nick had started Wilson he would have beaten the proclaimed Draft Champion sending Jared to a 1-2 start.

And now on to the defenses:

Dane Looks like he’s stockpiling defenses as he already had the number two defense and picked up the number one defense.  This would be a great move if they were the number one and number two running backs, or wide receivers.  But you can only play one defense.  This will lead to lots of second guessing on which defense to play.  Good luck with your defense selection each Sunday Dane.

Austin continued his defense for defense swap. But this one bit him in the butt as he dropped the Lions Defense and started a defense that scored -2 points.  Not a huge deal considering he lost by 60 points (what I am calling the worst loss in League history, Where’s the ELIAS sports bureau for our league?).  But still, intriguing play by Austin.

Taylor’s dropping Brandon Jacob’s makes sense, he has 6 yards on 10 carries for the season.  But not sure picking up another defense makes sense.  His starters looked stack to be able to play with anyone, but his bench leaves much to be desired.  This could have been a move to bolster his bench with some depth, or to store a potential breakout star.

Week 2 - Start Freaking Out

When Darren McFadden is outscoring most of our starting RBs, it is time to start freaking out.  When Michael Vick is the #2 scoring QB, it is time to start freaking out. Right?  Wrong, once again, the season will play out the way it normally does.  Our league will have two or three surprises but for the most part, Tom Brady will come back and have a great season, Arian Foster will return to his glory and things will normalize.  So what happened in Week 2.

Remember my predictions last week?  If not, here they are:

Week 2 Forecasts
  • Several match-ups this week will provide plenty of entertainment:
    • Brady/Matt E (CALLED IT!!!!)
    • Jake/Jared (Right again!!!!)
    • Mike/Matt B (So wrong...c'mon mike)
  • Boring Match-up of the Week Prediction:
    • Taylor/Dane (I was right as it was a freaking blowout...still entertaining though I guess to see the 1st and 3rd highest scoring teams of the week beat on each other)

Week 2 Recap/Scoreboard

Taylor: From the lowest scoring team to the highest and a 70 point swing.  What is the difference you ask?  In one word, Marshalvinilson.  (It is a word, I promise.  If you don't believe me, check Key and Peele's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gODZzSOelss).  Yes, Marshawn, Calvin and Wilson.  Marshawn went beast mode like he should as did Calvin and Wilson hit the bench as he should.  Congrats Taylor, let's see what your team puts up this week.

Dane:  Rough loss for you.  You are the 3rd highest scoring team of the week and lose.  That won't happen often.

Matt B: Congrats on your first big win since being back.

Brady:  Really rough lose.  CK only gets you 5 points while Rivers is hitting 29 on your bench and Eddie Royal scores a hat trick!

Matt E:  Good win for you. It feels good to still be undefeated doesn't it?

Spike:  After losing last week when you only needed 8 point from Tate, I think you need to drop him.  Turns out he really isn't that Golden...

Week 3 Forecasts

Waiver Wire Watch

Waiver Wire Watch
Taylor: Fred Jackson for Christine Michael
Brandon Jacobs for Robert Woods
Taylor decided to drop his female running back and picked up a RB splitting time with CJ Spiller.  Turns out his players got 17 points for his bench.  Mainly depth pickups, but let’s face it.  Taylor has room to tinker with his team after the dominant performance in Week 2.
Brady: Eddie Royal for Jacquizz Rodgers
Easily the best early season pickup.  Eddie Royal has turned into a TD machine in San Diego.  5 TD’s through two games equals his TD numbers for the past three seasons combined.  Will he be able to keep up this hot streak?  Or just fade back into oblivion.  Time will tell.  But as for now, it’s a great pickup.
Mike: Julius Thomas for Cordarelle Patterson
Another good production day from a waiver wire pickup on the bench.  Julius Thomas had a good day with 10 points, but he was stuck on the bench.  Not sure what the reasoning for the pickup here was.  Mike already has Tony Gonzales and the TE position is a flex spot anyways.  With so many options in Denver it will be interesting to see if Julius Thomas can keep up this early production.  Patterson also scored 7 points in week two, and his role only stands to increase as he becomes more comfortable in the offense.
Jared: Jerome Simpson for Malcom Floyd
With Jared’s wealth of receivers any waiver wire pickups were purely depth based.  And this is still too early to call, both of them scored a few points, but Jerome Simpson did have a drop off in production as Malcom Floyd’s increased.
Spike: Jared Cook for Ronnie Hillman
Spike continues his desire to start an entire team based on Rams players with the pickup of Jared Cook.  If this did nothing more than get Ronnie Hillman off his team this was a lgood pickup.  Ronnie Hillman looked confused and inept in Denver’s offense.
Austin: Lions D for Colts D
Not sure Austin’s reasoning here.  He already had two defenses so there seems to be no real reason to pick up another defense.  If the two you already have aren’t good enough you probably are doing something wrong.  But, you can’t argue with results.  With Spike’s Rams getting him 0 points and Austin getting 9 points from his new pickup he was able to pick up the victory and move to 2-0.
Jake: Joique Bell for Isaac Redman
Not sure what Jake was thinking here.  Redman was part of his team name!  For this the fantasy football gods cursed him while allowing him to score 93 points and still losing.  Joique Bell has had a good first two weeks, and Reggie Bush may get hurt at any minute with all the touches he’s getting.  But cutting part of your name will not be smiled upon.
The only good thing about this is that Redman has scored 0 points both weeks.
Dane: Robert Woods for Andre Brown
Dane seemed attracted to Robert Woods TD percentage.  Much like the author of this posting, in week one Robert Woods had 1 catch and 1 TD.  As good as that sounds to have a 100% catch-to-TD ratio, it’s not much to build on.  But dropping an injured player to pick up someone putting up points is always a good idea.

Week 1 - Stop Freaking Out

You can never really tell anything about the season from week one.  As Taylor or Nick or one of you finance dude's may understand, you never invest in anything based on one statistic.  You look at trends, am I right? The same thing applies for Fantasy football.

Don't Look to Deeply into Week 1
  • Matt E, Peyton will not be the best QB all year although he is a great QB to have this year.
  • Taylor, David Wilson will get the ball back and will be fine.  Are they really going to have ole man jacobs running the ball?
  • Brady, you are really unfortunate that Vereen broke his wrist as he was likely going to be the starter week 2. Thank goodness for me, I have Stevan Ridley who gets another shot to try and redeem himself and return to his top 10 form.
  • How many of you are jumping to the waivers to grab Julius Thomas?  Don't worry, 5 other guys are too.  But you know what, Welker, Thomas, Thomas and Decker will all get tds throughout the year and a big week 1 doesn't mean it will last.  Remember that cowboys receiver (Kevin Ogletree) from last year that had 2 or 3 tds his first game and then only ended up with 4 all season?  Fun Fact: did you know that Julius Thomas played 5 games with the Broncos in 2011 and only had 1 reception for 5 yards?

Match Recap
  • Taylor, I am excited for the chicken wings you owe me this next week.  Our match-up hurt your pride and your wallet, it doesn't get better than that (even if I can't take much credit).
  • Matt B.  Welcome to Fantasy Football.  In your first week, your 3 highest scoring players were all on your bench and you lost by 1.  Those same three players put up 75 points alone....enough to tie your competition.  It only gets better from here my friend. Dane, consider yourself lucky and take it as a gift, for your birthday.
  • Nick, your RB core is crazy scary.  Reggie was a great addition for you and AP is sick as always. If Cruz keeps putting up numbers (biting my tongue as I said you were stupid for keeping him from last year) you are going to "cruz" through this season.  Bad pun?
  • Jake, you get the trophy for best name change of the week.  Dane, change your name ASAP. Seriously.
  • Boring Match-up of the Week goes too.....Spike/Mike.  Beside Larry Fitz, every player was very mediocre and not really fun to watch.  It came down to 10 points between them and all Mike had was a kicker.  Do you seriously stay up and watch an entire game just to see what the kicker does? BORING!
Week 2 Forecasts
  • Several match-ups this week will provide plenty of entertainment:
    • Brady/Matt E
    • Jake/Jared
    • Mike/Matt B
  • Boring Match-up of the Week Prediction:
    • Taylor/Dane

ESPN's Draft Grades and Comments

Somehow ESPN generated draft grades for us and this is what they thought.  Do you agree?
